FUN FACT:  In Britain, governor Publius Ostorius Scapula defeated Caratacus and the Silures in the territory of the Ordovices in central Wales. Caratacus sought sanctuary with Cartimandua, queen of the Brigantes in northern England, but she was a Roman ally and handed him over to Ostorius. Despite the defeat, the Silures continued to fight.

The captured Caratacus was exhibited in chains in Claudius' triumph in Rome, but his dignified demeanor persuaded the emperor to spare his life and allowed his family to live free in Rome. 

Just sayin'.

Fun Fact: The toothbrush as we know it today was not invented until 1938. From around 3000 BC, people used anything from a 'chew stick' - a thin twig with a frayed end, to feathers, bones and porcupine quills to clean their teeth.

The bristle toothbrush, similar to the type used today, was invented in China in 1498. The bristles were actually made of coarse hairs taken from the back of a hog's neck and attached to a bamboo stick or bone.

William Addis of England is credited with creating the first mass-produced toothbrush in 1780. In 1770 he had been placed in jail for causing a riot. While in prison, he decided that the method for teeth brushing of the time – rubbing a rag on one's teeth with soot and salt – could be improved. So he took a small animal bone, drilled small holes in it, obtained some bristles from a guard, passed the bristles through the holes on the bone and glued them.

The first patent for a toothbrush was by H. N. Wadsworth on November 7th, 1857 in the USA, but mass production of the product in America didn't begin until 1885. The rather advanced design had a bone handle with holes bored into it for the Siberian Boar hair bristles. Boar wasn't an ideal material; it retained bacteria, it didn't dry well, and the bristles would often fall out of the brush.

Boar bristles were used until 1938, when nylon bristles were introduced by Dupont de Nemours. The first nylon bristle toothbrush, made with nylon yarn, went on sale on February 24, 1938, and was called Doctor West's Miracle Toothbrush.

The first electric toothbrush, the Broxodent, was introduced by the Squibb company under the name Broxodent. The company (now Bristol-Myers Squibb) released it at the centennial of the American Dental Association in 1960.

In January 2003, the toothbrush was selected as the number one invention Americans could not live without, beating out cars, computer, mobile/cell phones, and microwave ovens.

Holy crap, we're back!

Affirmatron and Radio Free Hollywood returns to iOWest this week.  Tyrone couldn't be happier.

This week the boys discuss Marty being fired, Brian teaching his first workshop at iOWest in October and the general malaise that comes with being a (non) working actor in LA.

Fun Fact:  When the sculptor Rodin created his fine piece of work titled "The Thinker", it wasn't at all the name he gave to it!

Originally, Rodin modelled the sculpture on Dante, author of 'The Divine Comedy' as he contemplated the associated Gates of Hell from the piece.

This week, Brian and Marty pontificate on what it’s like to be adults who play make-believe. Then they explore the world of fancy food and emergency French. The duo discusses the pitfalls of “actoritis,” and how much of those celebrity interviews do they believe anyway? And what would iO West be like if it were a Legion of Doom? Finally, after getting “tapped” by a big website this week, Affirmatron tries to figure out how to turn their lo-fi operation into a multi-media empire, with the the help of their "graduate study" in television comedy when they could have been outside playing in the fresh air.

FYI: We are planning to be back in the iO West bar balcony on Saturday, so stop by and say hi, or comfortably stalk from across Hollywood Boulevard.

Summer's over, and this could be the last week that our fearless heroes are podcasting from out of iO. This week Brian and Marty talk about their very first on-camera interview on Revver Live.  Marty reflects on the opening weekend of "Everybody Wants to Be Italian."  Then the boys discuss why there can be No MTV for Old Men.  Brian recounts a very busy night of improv, and finally Affirmatron considers [straightens tie] what is the deal with actors in L.A.

What a crazy time it is here at Affirmatron HQ!  First off, Marty and Brian recollect their performance at the Sunday Smorgasbord at iO West. There are some NSFW portions, not by us, so be warned). Up next a blatant plugfest of “Everybody Wants to Be Italian” (featuring Marty and finally in select theaters this Friday. To see if it's opening near you, click here.) turns into a discussion about Hollywood stereotypes and sexual harassment in the biz behind closed doors. The boys round it all up with an exploration of avoiding fights in the hot summer nightlife of Hollywood Boulevard, and the seedy underbelly of first jobs as kids.

Radio Free Hollywood is back from Silver Lake once more, although quite pointedly NOT from the suckfest of Sunset Junction.  As iO West is now open again, Marty and Brian recap the most trying summer that has strained their heretofore storied bromance.

A discussion of their now past performance at iO’s Sunday Smorgasbord turns into a recollection of Laura Krafft’s sketchwriting class and what it must be like to have to abandon one’s life and move cross country for a gig. Marty lets us know about the September 5 limited release of “Everybody Wants to Be Italian” (check out to see if it’s coming to your city initially here and he'll let you know when it's getting a wider release), then the boys talk traffic, “Tropic Thunder,” and checking out the caliber of competition at auditions.

Finally, they round it all out by talking about not talking about politics.

First off, the title of the post…Apparently there’s this site all about making goals and making friends with friends who love making goals. We here at Affirmatron are all about accomplishing goals (and "43" is a rather obscure number...apparently).

This week we explore the cruel world of internet message boards and then we take you out on the town with a sampling of the ins and outs of Los Angeles nightlife. Up next, how to give criticism of your comedic friends’ performances (the first part of this conversation was cut off in a snafu, but you’ll quickly catch on), how important is it to be a team player and what’s the difference between stealing jokes and homages?
